Remembering Lucas Lowe

Writer: Gary MervisGary Mervis

Each summer brings new faces, friendships, and memories, but as we prepare for another summer at Camp Good Days, I can't help but think about those who won't be with us this year. Recently, I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Lucas Lowe, a longtime camper who became such a special part of Camp.

Lucas came to Camp Good Days at a very young age. Right from the start, he carried himself with a maturity that made you forget how young he really was. It was only after our conversations ended that I would remind myself he was just a kid. The reality was that Lucas faced more challenges at a young age than most adults ever will.

He had endured a battle that forced him to grow up too fast and robbed him of moments most of us take for granted. There were experiences he would never have and milestones he would never reach, but despite it all, Lucas never allowed his circumstances to define him or diminish his love for life.

He embraced everything life had to offer. Lucas participated in so many of our programs—joining us on our Annual Fun Fest Trip to Florida, making memories at Camp, and even stepping onto the field as an honorary coach at the Courage Bowl. From his first Courage Bowl, he became a lifelong and valued member of the SUNY Brockport Football team, serving as a true source of inspiration. A few years ago, the team even presented Lucas with his very own Empire 8 Conference Championship ring. There are so many other moments I could share about Lucas, but my favorite were our conversations.

Every morning at Camp, I would sit on the deck with my coffee, appreciating the beauty and tranquility of the lake while breathing in the crisp air of a new day. Lucas would come over to join me, and we would talk about everything—life, Camp, and whatever else was on our minds that morning. I learned so much from Lucas during these conversations, and I will always be grateful for each one we shared.

Last summer, I asked Lucas if there was anything he had always wanted to do, and he told me that he wanted to see Graceland. With the help of a few of our volunteers, we were able to make that dream a reality. Although I couldn't be there, the photos we received clearly showed how much the trip meant to him. You could see it in his smile and the pure joy on his face.

After the trip, we created a photo book, and I've kept a copy on my desk ever since. Now that he's gone, I know I'll look through it whenever I think of him. It not only reminds me of how significant that trip was for him but also brings back memories of who he was—the energy he carried and the way he truly made the most of every moment.

Lucas was and will always be a beloved member of the Camp Good Days family. His presence made Camp feel even more special—not just for himself but for everyone around him. His laughter, energy, and spirit will always be part of Camp, and as we say goodbye, we hold on to those memories.

Lucas, you left a mark on all of us, and while it will never be the same without you, we will carry your spirit with us and honor your energy, laughter, and love for life in everything we do. Rest in peace, my friend. We will never forget you.
