An Honor That Meant the World

Over the past four decades, I’ve had the privilege of watching Camp Good Days grow from a small idea into something so much bigger than I could have ever imagined. Even after all these years, moments still come along that leave me completely humbled and a little bit speechless. This was one of those moments.
About a month ago, I was notified that Monroe County Executive Adam J. Bello had created a new award: the Gary Mervis Youth Team Achievement Award. I was truly overwhelmed—not because of the name on the award, but because of what it represents. This award was created to recognize youth teams across Monroe County who go above and beyond to make a positive difference in their communities.
To know that my name is now tied to something that celebrates leadership, service, and teamwork among the future of our generations is deeply humbling. These are qualities that have always meant a great deal to me and ones that I’ve seen time and time again in the campers, volunteers, and supporters who make Camp Good Days what it is today.
The award presentation took place last week. I wasn’t able to attend, but my wife, Wendy, was there and had the honor of presenting the award alongside County Executive Bello. Wendy has attended this ceremony many times over the years, as she is the Chairman of the Monroe County Youth Board, and when she came home, she told me it was one of the best she’s ever been to. She was truly impressed by how thoughtful and well-organized the event was and by the incredible youth being honored. It meant a great deal to hear how meaningful it was—not just to her, but to everyone in the room.
I want to sincerely thank County Executive Bello—not only for this unexpected and deeply appreciated honor but for continuing to shine a light on the youth in our community who are making a difference. His support of our community’s youth is something I’ve long admired, and this award is just another example of that commitment.
To everyone who helped put the ceremony together—thank you. I know how much effort goes into events like this, and I’m grateful for the heart and care that made it such a success.
This award may carry my name, but it belongs to the young people who show us every day what’s possible when you lead with kindness, work together, and believe in something bigger than yourself. I’m honored to be a small part of something that celebrates all of that.
