This past weekend, I had the privilege of being part of our final Adult Oncology Program of the summer—Camp S.O.A.R., which stands for Supportive Oncology Adult Retreat. It brings together men and women living with cancer for a few days of rest, renewal, and connection. The good Lord blessed us with beautiful weather as fall began to settle in, and it felt like the perfect way to close out another incredible season at Camp Good Days.
What struck me most, as it always does, was the participants themselves. Those facing cancer are the very heart of why Camp Good Days exists, and for a short time, they got to take a break from the weight of their treatment and daily struggles, and replace it with comfort, community, and joy. To see them share stories, laugh together, and draw strength from one another was a powerful reminder of the difference these programs make.
Something I do after each program is ask myself: Did we keep everyone safe? Did the Camp look its best? Did people experience the magic that makes Camp so unique? Thanks to the combined efforts of our staff, volunteers, and participants, the answer to each of those questions was yes. The facility was beautiful, the program was meaningful, and the joy on people’s faces spoke louder than words.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the remarkable people who stand behind the program. Once again, Tamara, who has been the anchor of our Adult Oncology Programs, put her whole heart into coordinating Camp S.O.A.R., ensuring that every detail was taken care of and that the weekend ran seamlessly. Alongside her, Michele and Mary Pat, leading the kitchen volunteers, poured their hearts into every meal they prepared. The food was outstanding—better than anything you’d find at a five-star restaurant. Kevin, our Maintenance Director, had the grounds looking more beautiful than ever, creating the perfect setting for the weekend, and Sister Fran’s service in the outdoor chapel was a moment of peace and inspiration that touched everyone present.
Together, our incredible staff and volunteers worked like a fine Swiss clock, each doing their part to create something truly magical. From the smiles I saw to the heartfelt gratitude expressed throughout the weekend, it was clear that something very special had taken place. Moments like these remind me not only of the mission that has guided Camp Good Days for so many years, but also of how fortunate I am to have such dedicated people by my side.
That feeling of gratitude extends beyond the weekend and into my everyday life—especially when I think about my wife, Wendy. I don’t think many people realize just how much she has meant to the success of Camp Good Days. Before joining us, she was a physical education teacher and coach at Rush-Henrietta. What began with my need for a lifeguard grew into her serving as Assistant Camp Director, then Program Director, and now, today, as Executive Director, where she stands as a cornerstone of our leadership. Every day, I am grateful for her knowledge, compassion, and unwavering commitment to our mission—and for the privilege of sharing this journey with her.
Closing out the summer with Camp S.O.A.R. was more than just finishing a season—it was another reminder of why Camp Good Days has become the magical place it is. The lake, the cabins, and the chapel provide the setting, but it is the people—our participants, our staff, and our volunteers—who bring it to life; and for that, I am deeply thankful.
